Are Loft Hatches A Standard Size?

Loft hatches are not all the same size.  There are a few standard sizes of loft hatches and we have listed them below.

If you are buying a new pre-made loft hatch then they are likely to be among a few standard sizes.

There is no minimum sizes set by building regulations.

This is a good guideline to consider if you are installing a new loft hatch, or making adjustments to an existing one.

Each ladder or hatch has its own manufacturer’s instructions and sizing guide, which will clearly display the dimensions and swing required (if it’s hinged or has integrated ladders).

Are Loft Hatches Easy To Install?

Yes. If you are thinking about installing a loft ladder, then you will be glad to know that it is definitely a task you can do at home with some basic DIY skills, just a few common tools and some handy information to follow.

Although it’s easy to fit a loft hatch yourself, it’s important to note the minimum sizes and how to measure for your loft hatch door.

Loft hatches are relatively easy to install for most DIY enthusiasts and they come in a variety of styles and materials, so you can choose whichever best suits your needs and the look you want.

Choosing the best loft ladder for your needs

When choosing a ladder to access your loft space, it’s important to consider a few factors surrounding your home, where they will be stored and how often you will use them.

What type of ladder do you use to access a loft space?

Depending on how often you will be accessing the loft, will determine the type of ladder you will need.  You may be able to avoid the effort of installing a permanent loft ladder!

If you only access the loft on rare occasions (ie using it for storage of Christmas decorations, kitchenware or winter clothing/bedding) then you may want to look at a less expensive and more practical solution like a foldable or telescopic ladder.

Telescopic Ladders

These types of ladders are lightweight, take up less space and can be used for many more jobs than a permanent set of loft ladders.

And of course its another instsallation job you can avoid!

Pull Down Extendable Loft Ladders

If you need access to the loft more often, then a better solution would be a loft hatch with pull down ladders which are more stable, and much easier than setting up a ladder every time you want to venture up.

I will be writing a post about pull down loft ladders and I cover the different types, pricing guide and how difficult they are to install.  I’ll also include how to measure them and the best sources to get them from.

I reviewed a number of telescopic ladders and decided to categorise them in a review post.

It must be said, I was quite impressed by the perfomrance of the telescopic ladders.

I genuinely didn’t think they would be up to the abuse of heavy duty use, but I was surprised at how sturdy they actually were.

So I decided to write a seperate article about them.

This is the post I have written about whether or not telescopic ladders are any good!
